Advises the Governor, Legislature, and state and local governments on ways to reduce earthquake risk. Investigates earthquakes and researches earthquake-related issues. Other services include:
- Manages California's Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program
- Reviews seismic activities funded by the state
- Provides consistent policy direction for earthquake-related programs for agencies at all government levels
- Proposes and reviews earthquake-related legislation
- Conducts public hearings on seismic safety issues and recommends earthquake safety programs to governmental agencies and the private sector
- Investigates and evaluates earthquake damage and reconstruction efforts following damaging earthquakes
