Be Ready Before It Burns: Wildfire Safety Tips for Ventura County

As wildfire season continues to start earlier and last longer each year, there’s no better time than now to prepare. Interface 211 Ventura County and the Ventura County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VCVOAD) are here with essential tips to help you and your family stay safe before and during a wildfire.

Before a Wildfire: Prepare Your Home and Your Plan

1. Know Your Risk

  • Check if you live in a high-fire threat district using the CPUC’s Fire Map.
  • If you do, you may be eligible for Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Care Coordination through 211. Find out more here.

2. Sign Up for Emergency Alerts

3. Defend Your Property from Fire

Follow National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines to create defensible space around your home:

  • Choose fire-resistant plants — see the NFPA Firewise list or ask a local landscaper.
  • Space out shrubs and trees to prevent fire from spreading.
  • Prune trees 6–10 feet off the ground and remove dead branches.
  • Mow grass regularly and keep it under 4 inches tall.
  • Clear dry vegetation, fallen leaves, pine needles, and other debris.

4. Build Your Emergency Supplies Kit

Prepare for both evacuation and sheltering at home:

  • Go-Kit: Pack 3 days’ worth of portable supplies, including 3 gallons of water per person (and pet).
  • Stay-at-Home Kit: Stock 2 weeks of food, water, and essentials in case of power outages.
  • Keep a 1-month supply of prescription medications in a child-proof container.
  • Store important documents (medical, financial, identification) in a waterproof, portable case.

During a Wildfire: Act Quickly and Stay Informed

1. Understand Evacuation Terms

  • Evacuation Warning: There’s a potential threat to life or property. Be ready to leave quickly.
  • Evacuation Order: Immediate threat to life. Leave your home and seek safety right away.

2. Monitor Fire Conditions

  • Stay alert to wildfire movement via:
    • Local news and radio
    • VC Emergency for live updates and shelter locations
    • 211 for real-time information on evacuation zones, shelters, and road closures

If you see flames nearby, regardless of evacuation level, don’t wait. LEAVE.

3. Communicate Smartly

  • Use text messages instead of calls to keep phone lines open for emergency responders.
  • Only call 911 if you are in immediate danger.
  • Call 211 for non-emergency assistance and resource information.
