March Developmental Disability Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Developmental disabilities exist on a spectrum, and each person’s journey toward self-determination is unique. Access to information and resources is essential in empowering individuals and their support networks. 211 helps by connecting people to critical services, including screenings, transportation, support groups, respite care, and more. Local Resources 

Access Central Coast / Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC) in Ventura County 

Access Central Coast, formerly called Independent Living Resource Center (TRICO), provides local resources and support for individuals with disabilities. The ILRC offers housing navigation programs that assist individuals in applying for, locating, and advocating for accessible housing. The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) helps people make informed decisions about long-term services, including support for acquiring assistive technology. Additional resources include emergency and disaster preparedness assistance, helping individuals plan for disasters, emergencies, and Public Safety Power Shutoffs.” 

Tri-Counties Regional Center 

Tri-Counties Regional Center provides supports and services for individuals with developmental disabilities living in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties so that they may live fully and safely as active and independent members of our community. 

Provides supportive services for individuals with a developmental disability. Services include:  

  • Advocacy assistance 
  • Daily living skills training 
  • Case management services 
  • Assistance with personal care 
  • Adaptive equipment and supplies 
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy 
  • Evaluation and diagnosis of developmental disabilities 
  • Counseling of the individual with a disability and his or her family 

Disability Employment WORKS (Workforce Development Board of Ventura County) 

Provides job-finding assistance to disabled people looking for work. Services provided include: 

  • Help finding work that is right for the individual 
  • Meet the right people & find the right services 
  • Receive education and training for their dream job 
  • Receive employment support 

Local Transportation 

Paratransit programs provide door-to-door (or curb-to-curb) transportation for purposes of shopping, banking, social events, medical appointments, getting to and from work, and similar activities for people with disabilities who need special accommodations and are unable to utilize other available means of transportation. Food/Meals 

Meal on Wheels programs prepare and regularly deliver meals to older adults, people with disabilities and others who have difficulties shopping and/or preparing food for themselves or traveling to a site where a meal is being served.

Respite Care/Caregivers  

In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Helps low-income elderly and people with disabilities stay in their homes by helping them pay for support services. Services include: 

  • Light domestic help 
  • Non-medical personal care 
  • Assistance to and from medical appointments

State Resources 

The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) 

The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) provides resources for Californians with developmental disabilities to make choices and lead independent, productive lives as members of their communities in the least restrictive setting possible. Resources include links to ability tools, Disability Rights California, California’s protection agency for people with disabilities, and locations to programs and services that provide support to children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities.

Whether it’s securing housing, finding employment support, accessing transportation, or connecting with local and state services, these resources help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
